The NCTJ’s Awards for Excellence ceremony took place 18th March 2022 with the top award for Trainee Journalist of the Year being presented to our very own Abbey Maclure.
Abbey, who studied at Leeds Trinity University, joined the Yorkshire Evening Post in 2019 and achieved the best overall results in the National Qualification in Journalism in the 2020-21 academic year.
Speaking of her award Abbey said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have been awarded Trainee of the Year, it came as a real surprise.
“The NQJ exams are rigorous tests to prepare you for being a senior journalist and newsdesk roles, so it’s a lovely boost after all the revision I did last summer.
“The NCTJ hosted a fabulous ceremony and it was an honour to celebrate with all those shortlisted.”
The Scotsman’s Health Correspondent, Elsa Maishman, also made her mark at the ceremony, walking away with the accolade for Student News Journalism as the NCTJ Distance Learning award winner.
Following the ceremony Elsa said: “I was thrilled to be given the award.
“Thank you to my editors at The Scotsman for their continued support, and indulging the obsession with Scotland’s Covid vaccine rollout which got me the award.
“And thanks to the NCTJ for a great event, it was wonderful to be able to attend in person.”
A number of our journalists, both past and present, were shortlisted for the awards with Sussex’s Connor Gormley being highly commended in the trainee podcast category.
Congratulations to all three of our deserving journalists.
