JPIMedia reporters have been urged to take part in the UK Journalist Safety Survey 2022.
Gary Shipton, Deputy Editor In Chief urged all journalists to make their views known.
“There cannot be a single journalist who has not suffered threats or abuse of one kind or another – for merely fulfilling their professional responsibilities and doing them to the best of their ability.
“In the 1990s I received a number of threats to my life and that of my young family over a series of articles I had written – which were accurate, honest and in the public interest.
“The police then refused to take action saying glibly that I should think twice in the future about what I wrote.
“That was before the madness of social media. Today the abuse is relentless and personal. It is totally unacceptable.
“A year ago the DCMS published guidance to help. The National Action Plan for the Safety of Journalists is something I warmly welcomed and thoroughly support.
“This survey builds on this guidance and I hope everyone will make their voices heard.”
